SOME IMPORTANT LITERARY DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES

  1. Simile- A figure of speech in which comparison of one thing with another is expressed .                             Most similes are introduced by 'as' or 'like'.                                                                                  Eg-It is as cold as ice /  He fought like a lion in the battle field
  2. Metaphor-  Describes a person or refers to something that is considered to possess similar characteristics to the person or object described.                                                                                       Eg-He was a lion in the battle field. / ''All the world's a stage(Shakespeare's seven)
  3. Irony- A contrast between expectations for what is going to happen and what actually does happen                                                                                                                                                         Eg-''you have chosen exactly the right person to give the responsibility''[when you know that the person chosen is not at all  suitable]
  4. Imagery - Represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses/ five senses, namely taste, touch sight, smell and sound.                                                                       Eg-''From there those that lifted eyes could count five mountain ranges one behind the other''  ('out-out' by Robert Frost)
  5. Onomatopoeia -Words which imitate the natural sound of things.                                   Eg-MEOW, BOW,, DING-DONG [the buzzing bee flew away.]
  6. Title-Suggestive title                                                          Most of the titles are suggestive of the content of the fiction, poetry, film etc..                                   Eg-Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Daffodils by William Wordsworth                          Ironic title                                                                    Ironic titles shows the irony of the title with regard to the content of the fiction, poetry, film etc..                                                                                                                                                         Eg-Happy prince by Oscar Wilde
